Intended Learning Outcome
By the end of this course, participants should be able to activate discourse and language use strategies to mediate specialised vocabulary/terminology and phraseology, within the domain of marine sciences, according to audience and purpose.
The focus (of this 30-hour course) is on Amplifying strategies to clarify meaning and facilitate understanding.
Methodology
Participant/content-centred learning approach. Communicative language activities: reception, mediation interaction, production.
Specific learning outcomes (adapted from CEFR (2020)):
Reformulating through paraphrasing and use of synonyms;
Explaining (breaking down) terminology by providing examples and definitions accessible to audience and purpose;
Illustrating by making comparisons, metaphors and/or analogies
Adapting delivery (use of language, style and/or register in order to incorporate the content of a text into a new text of a different genre and register.
