17 UAlg scientists are among the most cited worldwide
The database covers 22 areas and 176 disciplines, featuring a selection of scientists whose published research has accelerated progress in their respective fields and influenced the productivity of other researchers' work.
The update, published last 19 October, uses citations from the Scopus database, a respected online database of abstracts and citations of articles in academic journals, until August 2021.
Of the more than 100 thousand researchers that appear in this list, and similarly to what had been done before, the data was compiled in two lists: one that allows to gauge the impact throughout the career, where 12 teachers/scientists of the University of Algarve stand out, and another that has as reference the impact over the last year, which contemplates 13 teachers/scientists of the Algarve Academy.
The UAlg scientists highlighted are distributed across several areas, with special emphasis on Marine and Environmental Sciences, Health Sciences, Exact and Engineering Sciences, among others.
These results were based on a study led by John Loannidis (Stanford University), joined by Jeroen Baas (Elsevier B.V.) and Kevin W. Boyack (SciTech Strategies) and provide standardised information on citations, H-index, coauthorship adjusted Hm index, citations of articles in different authorship positions and a composite indicator. The first version was published in 2019, with the purpose of creating a publicly available database of over 100,000 scientists, and since then the publication has been updated every year.
The study can be found here on the Public Library of Science Biology (PLOS Biology) website.
